We love studying history, and there is just something special about studying the history of our own state. We completed a state study this past spring with the help of two products from Knowledge Box Central: the Nebraska State History Lapbook and the Nebraska State History Lapbook Journal. Both products use the same study guide, but are designed for two different age groups. This makes it more convenient for the whole family to study state history together. A lapbook and lapbook journal for each of the 50 states is available from Knowledge Box Central. I used the Nebraska State History Lapbook with my son, who was nine at the time of our study.

Contents

The Nebraska State History Lapbook, intended for use by students in grades K-8, includes the following components:

  • a step-by-step assembly and layout guide, complete with photos of the final product
  • a materials list
  • a detailed study guide packed full of information about Nebraska
  • several pages of lapbook pieces
  • student instructions for completing the booklets

Easy Intructions

The assembly instructions are clear and easy to follow.

Several diagrams included in the Nebraska State History Lapbook show exactly how to create the lapbook, as well as how and where to attach the lapbook pieces. I assembled the lapbook base, but the procedures for completing the lapbook are so carefully explained that my son had little difficulty filling out and attaching his own pieces. The study guide includes all of the necessary facts and data to complete the lapbook pieces. This makes it so much handier than other state studies I have used that require parents to find the information on their own. The study guide also contains additional information, such as museums, annual festivals within the state, and website links for more information.

I enjoy craft projects, and messes don’t really bother me. So, my family enjoys completing lapbooks. As the Nebraska State History Lapbook does involve a great deal of cutting and gluing, however, it may not be of interest to every family. I did find that keeping track of the lapbook pieces could be challenging at times, so I gave my son a baggie for storage between sessions. We also used a shoe box lid to hold the pieces as he cut them out.

Nebraska State History Lapbook Formats

The Nebraska State History Lapbook is available in four formats. I chose to use the e-book format because it allows me to print as many copies as I need for our family. You can also purchase the PDF file on a CD. A printed version and pre-assembled lapbook are also available. The printed or pre-assembled lapbooks may not be copied.

If you like alternatives to worksheets and workbooks, enjoy hands-on activities, and don’t mind a little cutting and gluing, you should enjoy using the Nebraska State History Lapbook. Unless, of course, you are from Alabama, in which case you will probably want to purchase the Alabama State History Lapbook from Knowledge Box Central instead!
